Our Story
nunubox began with our family's need: to create simple, screen-free learning tools after our daughter's severe myopia diagnosis.

When our daughter was diagnosed with severe myopia, it changed the way we thought about screens, play, and learning at home. Like many parents, we had leaned on screens because they were convenient and easy. But that diagnosis became our family's wake-up call.
As parents, we wanted better options — activities that could keep our children engaged, learning, and happily occupied without constant screen time or complicated prep. That is where nunubox began.
nunubox was created from a real family need: simple, hands-on learning tools that fit into everyday life.
"Our daughter's eyes changed how our family thought about learning, play, and screen time."
nunubox is deeply shaped by the women in our family — two mothers whose lives and work have always centred around children, learning, and care.

Mam' Virginia brings years of experience in education through her work as a Coordinator and Supervisor at the Molteno Institute for Language & Literacy and Vista University. Her background spans foundation phase teaching, language and mathematics learning, teacher development, curriculum support, assessment, mentoring, and training. Her influence lives in nunubox through a focus on strong early learning foundations, literacy, and practical teaching support.

Mama Mapuleng brings more than four decades of experience as an educator, principal, school leader, lecturer, assessor, and tutor. Her work across school, tertiary, and tutoring environments gives nunubox a grounded understanding of how children learn in real classrooms, homes, and one-on-one support spaces. Her continued tutoring work reminds us that children thrive when practical tools, patient guidance, family support, and consistent effort work together.

Alongside these educational roots is a background in product design within the financial services sector. That experience helped shape nunubox into something practical and user-friendly — turning ideas into clear, thoughtful tools that are simple for busy parents and genuinely useful for children.
nunubox sits at the intersection of family, education, and design.
These products are not just made to look good. They are made to be useful, playful, reusable, and realistic for everyday life.

We love and appreciate the mothers who shaped us. As they grow older, it means even more to carry their influence into the tools we create for our own children — and now for other children too.
nunubox is our way of bringing together what our family knows best: care, education, and thoughtful design — all in service of helping children learn well, away from screens, and with joy.

Growing with intention
As nunubox grows, our goal is to support more families with screen-free learning tools and contribute to children's eye-health awareness in South Africa.
We're a small, family-started business and we're proud of that. Every product we create comes from a real need we experienced ourselves.
